1970s floral velvet midi skirt outfit

When I put these fall outfits together I was envisioning romantic and classic. Something that would be appropriate for a weekend at the country estate, if I owned one! Think Ralph Lauren meets Laura Ashley.

The style originated centuries ago in England, popularized by the British aristocracy. When travelling to their rural homes they required a totally different wardrobe than the more formal clothing they wore in the city. Practical clothing more suitable for shooting, riding, fishing, picnicking, gardening and other outdoor leisure pursuits.

Of course over the years the style has been re-interpreted and expanded upon by many designers.  Whether it’s referred to as country chic, British or English country style, country classic, heritage look or American preppy, the bottom line is, it is a look that stands the test of time and is meant to conjure images of  casual elegance and an upper class lifestyle.

Key components include tweeds, plaids, capes, shawls, scarves, boots, equestrian elements, vintage inspired florals, chunky sweaters, textures and earth tones.

40s Vera Maxwell wool suit

This idea for these outfits started when I happened upon this blue wool boucle Vera Maxwwell 1940s skirt suit.  I loved the equestrian inspired fitted jacket with its contrasting black velvet collar. So it came home with me.  After I paired it with a vintage Hermes scarf and tall black leather boots I felt I was ready to ride side saddle across the countryside!

Wearing a suit is a more formal look . So I like to mix the pieces to create different, more casual, outfits.

Here I paired the jacket with one of my 70s floral velvet skirts, a black 1940s wool knit button front top with beaded trim and 70s tan leather boots.  I previously styled a bohemian look with this skirt.

I had also just thrifted a pashmina shawl and a black velvet vintage beret. Both pieces I paired with another of my 70s velvet skirts, along with the 70s boots and 40s bead trimmed top.

Accessorized with my favorite vintage  brooch for fall, maples leaves with gold rhinestones, a 1950s rust color thermoset necklace,50s black and rust beaded clip on earrings and a vintage tapestry clutch.

Here’s an inspiration board I put together for more ideas on putting together an elegant country inspired look.

I can picture fireside dining at some picturesque country inn on a crisp cool  fall evening wearing any of these!
